Douz, the gateway to Tunisian desert

by

In our previous posts, we talked about many regions of Southern Tunisia like Tozeur, Zammour, Tataouine, etc, to show all the beauty of this part of the country. In addition, spring is the perfect season to visit the south of Tunisia, since it’s a breath-taking experience that you have to do at least once in your life. And Douz is definitely one of these magic places to visit.

Douz is a little town located in the south of the country (on the southeast shore of Chott El Jérid) and attached to the governorate of Kebili. During antiquity, Douz was considered as the most important oasis in the region. Its inhabitants are esssentialy Mrazig who are, according to the tradition, arab immigrants from the Banu Sulaym tribe who arrived in Tunisia in the 13th century.

This beautiful city is known for its splendid oases and its souk, where you can find all kind of handmade products. You can also find an ethnic museum that illustrates the life of people who used to live in the desert. Each year in December, the ‘Festival of Sahara’ takes place in Douz with many cultural and musical events, in order to promote the region.

Douz can also be the perfect destination for those who are interested in hiking and excursions. It’s the starting point of many camel rides, 4*4 excursions, treks, etc. Spending the night under the starry sky of Douz, with the silence of the desert, is one the craziest experiences that you can have in your life.
